Welcome to the 11th International Student Seminar. The 11th ISS will be held from March 4th to March 9th, 2013. This is a seminar of young scientists, for young scientists from all over the world, organized by young scientists from the Graduate School of Biostudies, Institute for Virus Research and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Science, Kyoto University.

One of the aims of this seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn about and inspired by a wide range of cutting-edge biological topics, while improving our discussion skills. The most important thing is to break through our intellectual, cultural, and language barriers, making scientific friendships and connections around world. Last year, ISS marked its 10th anniversary. We will return to the origin and get a fresh start from the 11th ISS. For this purposes, we decided on the slogan "No boundaries! Everything starts from your interests." To share the valuable time for all participants, we have implemented several innovations in keeping with the spirit of our slogan.

The first initiative is the rearrangement of the seminar schedule. We would like to give many young scientists the opportunity to present and discuss their works. For this purpose, we will provide four presentation formats. These will consist of a Group discussion, Short-Talk session, Long-Talk session, and poster session. To encourage discussion and better understandings, the group discussion will be held before the talk sessions. This aim is to overcome a barrier of communication across diverse scientific fields and to share the scientific backgrounds.

The second initiative is to provide ample time for communication including informal discussions. For improved understandings and valuable discussions, we reconsidered the time allocations for short and long talk sessions. Furthermore, an overnight retreat will be held at Ninnaji temple. This retreat provides great opportunities to communicate across laboratories, borders and languages for all participants. We hope the experience may contribute to the development of all participants' international careers.

We are looking forward to your cool science and hot discussions in the 11th ISS.
